With a gift, the person giving the gift derives as much value from doing so as the person receiving it.

Often, the actual gift is quite unimportant in and of itself. It is more the statement it makes about the relationship between the person giving and the person receiving and the status of both.

If it was purely about the thing being gifted and the value it brought to the person receiving the gift, it would be more charity and less gift.
