I just watched Elon Musk's recent interview with Chris Anderson of TED.

The theme of the interview is 'A future worth getting excited about'.

We always need something that we can look forward to with anticipation and excitement in order to stay inspired and motivated in the things we do. 

The things that we look forward to with excitement can vary in terms of the timeframes involved. 

We might be excited about going to a top restaurant this weekend, but we won't be excited right now about going there three months from now.

We might be excited about going on that vacation three months from now, but we won't be excited today about going on that vacation three years from now. 

The longer the timeframe, the more audacious the thing that we look forward to ought to be for it to evoke and hold excitement in us until we get there. 

A vision to colonise Mars and actively working towards it certainly qualifies over a timeframe as long as our lifespan.
