This week, I started watching Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.
The foundational concept of alchemy in the show has a simple law - the law of equivalent exchange. While Alchemy is the science of transforming a form of matter into a different form of matter, it can only be done in such a way that something of equivalent value is provided in order to create something else of that value. Thus, something cannot be created out of nothing, for instance.
This extends very well to the pursuit of overnight success and shortcuts in general.
It is a common want of a lot of people where they want to become very rich or famous or skilled or knowledgeable at something without putting in the required effort. Hence, they constantly look for shortcuts and tips and tricks that they can use to get this done. And as a result, never really get anywhere.
The extension from Alchemy is that there are no shortcuts and there is no such thing as an overnight success. We need to put in the effort to reap the rewards.
It has to be an equivalent exchange.
