Most good judicial systems in the world work by precedent.
It works as follows.
There are laws that can be interpreted in any number of ways. When a case is being heard at the court, the lawyers highlight how the law has been interpreted before in a different case and how the current case is similar to that case and hence the law needs to be interpreted in a similar manner now. If you have watched any courtroom dramas on television, this is the reason you see the lawyers quoting judgements from cases that have been heard in the past.
How others see us works by precedent as well.
If you feel you are not getting something that you deserve - a promotion, a raise, an audition, an interview - then it just might be that the precedent that you have set doesn't merit giving you a chance.
Try setting a new precedent.
